Tribute to Founder of BITW
Albert and Alberta Gilbert welcomed into this world their firstborn,
Tommy Lee Gilbert on September 7, 1952 in Oakland, CA.
At first sight they recognized his greatness and immediately
began to invest in his future. In the 12th grade he met the love
of his life Sherryl Grace. After graduation Tommy enlisted in
the United States Air Force where he served in the Vietnam
War and received an honorable discharge.
On June 3, 1972
Tommy took Sherryl’s hand in marriage.
Tommy wore several hats throughout his life. In the military
he was introduced to Karate. Years later in the backyard of
his home he opened his first Karate school, the world
renowned Best In The West Karate School, where he
developed & trained 8 sport karate world champions.
He was well respected as a committed officer on the Oakland Police Department where he served wholeheartedly for several years. Everywhere he went, no matter which hat he was wearing, The Professor (to BITW), Pastor T (at Greater love ministries), Mr. Gilbert, Dad, Son, Or Simply Tommy, he touched, influenced and changed lives. He motivated people to do what seemed impossible. He pushed loved ones to achieve the unattainable. He showed love and genuine concern to all he came across. He saw the Best in EVERYONE and encouraged us ALL to see the best in ourselves.
For this we will sadly miss the founding father of BITW martial arts academy, the one and only Professor Tommy Gilbert |
